Votez pour le prochain Pape - Vote for the next Pope (+)
Your vote won't change a thing but you can give your opinion on a lot of questions regarding the next Pope. Weirdly enough, voters are against the ordination of women but want celibacy for priesthood to be optional. 28 mars 2005 | 17:08

French survivors of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz have gathered at Paris City Hall for a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of its liberation and to recount the horrors they witnessed. Why the US is helping tsunami victims (+)
Did anyone really think the US had no ulterior motive when Bush announced a 350 million $ aid to Asian countries struck by the tsunami?
Here's why - on Newsday.com - the American governement is being so generous: "The Bush administration is hoping that massive U.S. relief aid to tsunami victims will lessen anti-American sentiment in the Muslim world and bolster the fight against terrorism, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday. "It turns out that the majority of those nations affected were Muslim nations," Powell said. "We'd be doing it regardless of religion, but I think ... [U.S. aid] does give the Muslim world and the rest of the world ... an opportunity to see American generosity, American values in action."" 03 janvier 2005 | 07:51

Permanent Guantanamo jails (+)
From The Guardian, a very disturbing article.
"The United States is preparing to hold terrorism suspects indefinitely without trial, replacing the Guantanamo Bay prison camp with permanent prisons in the Cuban enclave and elsewhere, it was reported yesterday." No suprise there, we know that Bush's "war on terror" also means "no rights for prisonners".
But read very carefully the next paragraph:
"The new prisons are intended for captives the Pentagon and the CIA suspect of terrorist links but do not wish to set free or put on trial for lack of hard evidence." Now that is definitely a new vision of justice and democracy. Should we be shocked? Considering Bush's track record (for further details, please watch Fahrenheit 9/11), hell no! 02 janvier 2005 | 08:01

Bonne année 2005 - Happy New Year (+)
May 2005 bring you the happiness you seek.
"One has to be a light to oneself; this light is the law. There is no other law. All the other laws are made by thought and so are fragmentary and contradictory. To be a light to oneself is not to follow the light of another, however reasonable, logical, historical, and however convincing. You cannot be a light to yourself if you are in the dark shadows of authority, of dogma, of conclusion." (Jiddu Krishnamurti / This Light in Oneself) 31 décembre 2004 | 08:16

"The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across southern and southeast Asia on Sunday, killing more than 7,000 people in six countries. [...] Quakes reaching a magnitude 8 are very rare. A quake registering magnitude 8 rocked Japan's northern island of Hokkaido on Sept. 25, 2003, injuring nearly 600 people. An 8.4 magnitude tremor that stuck off the coast of Peru on June 23, 2001, killed 74." 26 décembre 2004 | 10:46
French climber reaches the top of Taipei 101 (+)
Amazing! This guy, who calls himself Spiderman climbed to the top of the world's tallest buildin. From USA Today: "Alain Robert, 42, took almost four hours to reach the top of the 1,679-foot building. The climb took him nearly twice as long as he had expected, partly because of dreary weather. Although he's climbed many of the world's tallest structures without the use of a rope, he climbed with one on Saturday, likely because of the wind and rain. He paused to rest every eighth floor and even chatted with the president of Taipei 101 before tackling the final stretch." 24 décembre 2004 | 03:53

Bush's flip-flop or media misquotes? (+)
Is GW incoherent or are news agencies misquoting - or wrongly interpreting - what the President is saying?
Associated Press - Jennifer Loven: "Bush Paints Rosy Picture of Iraq Situation
President Bush painted a rosy picture of the situation in Iraq, claiming significant progress Saturday in the U.S. military's battle in an insurgent stronghold. In his weekly radio address, Bush praised the assault on Fallujah, west of Baghdad."
Reuters - Unattributed: "Bush Warns of Growing Violence in Iraq

US prison population: 1.47 million (+)
USA Today had published statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Justice. It appears "the population of the nation's state and federal prisons rose to a record 1.47 million last year. Cost of the election: $4 billion and climbing (+)
MSNBC ran an Associated Press paper a few days ago on the total cost of the election.
"In the business world, $5 billion would be enough to buy out Donald Trump -twice. It would pay for about 2,200 Super Bowl commercials, or educate about 30,000 students at Yale, the alma mater of President Bush and Sen. John Kerry. [...] It's a lot of money - but still a bargain compared with what it could cost to match the net worth of the nation's wealthiest person, Bill Gates. The Microsoft founder could cover campaigning and voting costs for about eight elections like this one - without going broke." 03 novembre 2004 | 05:15
Bush announcing he won? (+)
According to Reuters via Yahoo, President Bush plans to declare victory in the 2004 election if he wins one of two remaining states, Nevada or New Mexico, and assumes he has already won Ohio, a senior adviser said early on Wednesday. The official said the White House considered Bush's electoral count to be at 269, including Ohio's 20 electoral votes, and did not believe the state's disputed provisional ballots would be enough to eliminate Bush's lead in the regular vote count there. "We won Ohio. It's done," the official said. 03 novembre 2004 | 05:07

US citizens living in Puerto Rico do not have the right to vote (+)
"Over the stern objections of a judge from Puerto Rico, a federal appeals court in Boston ruled yesterday that US citizens living in Puerto Rico do not have the right to vote in presidential elections. In a two-page opinion, the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, relying on two prior rulings, concluded that the US Constitution does not confer voting rights on Puerto Rico, an American territory whose residents were granted US citizenship in 1917.
But in a sharply worded dissent, Judge Juan R. Torruella of Puerto Rico wrote, ''What we have in this case is without question the creation and perpetuation of substandard, second-class citizens, with less rights than those enjoyed by the main class of US citizens." And I thought the Cold War was over! (+)
Very (and I mean very) interesting analysis by Babak Layeghi on what the War on Terror is really about. Here is an excerpt: "Using 9/11 as a pretext, the United States has managed to strategically surround Russia, its Cold-War enemy. [...] Hence, it should not come as a surprise, for one to recognize the fact that the US today, has over a hundred military bases and installations scattered throughout the world, yet more importantly there are more American bases in the former Soviet states than Russia has itself."
I may not totally agree with him, but his views shed a different light on what's been going on for the last three years. 26 septembre 2004 | 07:42

Pre-emptive stupidity (+)
Having learned well from Bush, Russia has claimed the right to strike pre-emptively "terrorist bases" anywhere in the world.
Putin offered 300m roubles ($10m) for information leading to the arrest of Chechen rebel leaders and in return, Chechen rebels promised to give $20 million to anyone helping them to capture President Vladimir Putin.
Prone to use of violence to resolve any issue, British Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw said Putin's move was understandable.
In its very enlightened editorial, The Daily Times (Pakistan) offers the following analysis: "All paradigms of security spring from one basic concept: self-preservation. But when people are pushed to a point where life becomes meaningless and when they are prepared to kill and get killed, they upend the concept of self-preservation. The resolve to lose life if it means perpetrating violence on the oppressor is hard to beat with mere use of force. The problem can only be tackled by going to the very root of that anger and desperation. But the Russian General’s statement does not indicate that Moscow is thinking of doing that. Its troops have carried out a systematic male genocide in Chechnya over the past four years, leaving thousands of Chechen women widows. Now these women are striking back and losing their lives and killing others in the process. This cycle cannot be allowed to go on. The US General’s statement upon arriving in Moscow is even more irksome because it shows Washington is prepared to give President Vladimir Putin a virtual carte blanche to go on doing exactly that which has already resulted in so much bloodshed. This is a recipe for disaster." 10 septembre 2004 | 05:44
Assault weapons ban: supported by the people, ignored by politicians (+)
Despite widespread popular support, the federal law banning the sale of 19 kinds of semiautomatic assault weapons is almost certain to expire on Monday. [New York Times]
The daily paper also mentions: "Efforts to renew the ban, which polls show is supported by at least two-thirds of Americans, have faltered this year on Capitol Hill. [...] "I think the will of the American people is consistent with letting it expire, so it will expire," Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, the majority leader, said on Wednesday." 10 septembre 2004 | 04:26

The Bush game (+)
Bushgame is an anti-Bush videogame.
Bushgame combines humor, opinion, and fact to bring an entertaining and informative video game adventure to people everywhere. The use of this medium will hopefully reach many people who have not had the time or interest to read up on some of the appalling things that have taken place in our government and society over the past four years. For those of you who are paying attention, hopefully this game has helped to clarify some of the important things at stake in the upcoming elections. I realize that this game does not cover every issue, problem, and appalling action of the Bush administration. There are too many stories to report. Some issues ended up taking a back seat to others. Just know that this is just a silly game and please inform yourself for real and read books...and most importantly...please vote. 30 août 2004 | 05:40

Prisoners being transported to Guantanamo (+)
There has been some talk about the treatment of Guantanamo prisoners but as any news story, it rapidly faded into oblivion replaced by John Kerry and the Athens Olympics. I found these pictures while surfing for information on how many Gitmo prisoners has been released and what fate awaited those still in Cuba... I havent't found the answer yet but I'm still searching. Lynndie England is being tried, but I doubt any legal measures will be taken against the American soldiers that have mistreated Gitmo prisoners for two long years. And we thought Abu Ghraib was bad!

The latest Newsweek Poll shows that a Kerry/Edwards ticket would get 51 percent of the vote versus 45 percent for the incumbent Bush/Cheney ticket. That marks a five-point bump for Edwards from the last Newsweek Poll (May 13-14).
However, in a three-way trial heat, with Independent Party candidate Ralph Nader, Kerry/Edwards leads with 47 percent, Bush/Cheney follows with 44 percent and Nader garners 3 percent of the vote.
Kerry has benefited from the Edwards annoucement, the only question is if he'll be able te maintain the lead. 10 juillet 2004 | 08:04
A minute of silence... (+)
... for more than 1,000 American soldiers who have died uselessly in Iraq.
Another 60 seconds for the Israeli wall that has been ruled illegal by the International Court of Justice. Any resemblance to persons living or dead, or to the Warsaw ghetto is purely coincidental.
Yet another 120 seconds for again learning that the Iraq war [was] 'waged on false intelligence'.
And the final 120 billion nanoseconds is for American scientists that aren't allowed, under the Bush administration, to express their views and discuss their research with colleagues in other countries.
Frank Herbert once wrote in The Children of Dune, "Atrocity is recognized as such by victim and perpetrator alike [...]. Atrocity has no excuses, no mitigating argument. Atrocity never balances or rectifies the past. Atrocity merely arms the future for more atrocity. It is self-perpetuating upon itself -- a barbarous form of incest. Federal Government standards say Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone, Ben Wallace and Shaquille O'Neal are overweight (+)
Read in The Center for Consumer Freedom:
What do basketball stars Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone, and Ben Wallace all have in common? [...] The U.S. government actually considers them "overweight." Lakers superstar Shaquille O'Neal is officially "obese." In fact, by the federal government's standard, 75 percent of the players in the NBA Finals are classified as either overweight or obese. [...]
Why does the government think these top athletes need to lose weight? Because current government standards make no distinction between muscle and fat. And in 1998, the U.S. government changed the cutoff for overweight. 14 juin 2004 | 07:53

American prisoners treated no differently than Iraqi detainees (+)
In his column entitled America's Abu Ghraibs, The New York Time's Bob Herbert reports:
Not only are inmates at prisons in the U.S. frequently subjected to similarly grotesque treatment, but Congress passed a law in 1996 to ensure that in most cases they were barred from receiving any financial compensation for the abuse. We routinely treat prisoners in the United States like animals. We brutalize and degrade them, both men and women. And we have a lousy record when it comes to protecting well-behaved, weak and mentally ill prisoners from the predators surrounding them. Very few Americans have raised their voices in opposition to our shameful prison policies. And I'm convinced that's primarily because the inmates are viewed as less than human.
